Bob Cooney has more than 25 years of experience working in communications, marketing, public relations and media advisory roles for not-for-profit, public organizations, including a large agricultural society and exhibition organization, two universities and the head office of a co-operative financial institution. He is passionate about helping people to tell their stories and giving them a voice.


By leveraging these past experiences, current media and community contacts and the ability to scale up to meet client requests, Bob and the Independent Communications team are able to move with agility to help you identify opportunities to implement communications, public and media relations and marketing solutions to support your organization. 


He is trained as a journalist and has received awards for communications projects that include a comprehensive and branded communications package for a major fundraising campaign, video production and a wide variety of writing projects.


Bob understands media (traditional and social) and has executed projects that have reached the right audiences – from local to international. He has helped people and organizations tell compelling stories, draw attention to issues, explain challenges and manage extremely good, and extremely bad news. He has developed credible and positive personal relationships with many different members of the media community, and views media representatives as allies and colleagues regardless of the circumstances.


Independent Communications is based in Spruce Grove, Alberta, and supports clients across western Canada, North America and Central America.


The company logo, formed of the stylized letters “I” and “C” form the phrase “I See.” Our wordmark, Independent Communications, reflects a passion for offering the best independent advice to a client based on a variety of factors including research, best practices and/or the combined experiences of the team and other independent creative affiliates we work with.
